Understanding NRH Traffic Cameras
Motorists in North Richland Hills may notice cameras and other communications equipment at many of the City's
busy intersections. The following information will help you understand the different types of equipment and
what it is used for:
Red Light Enforcement Cameras
The red light enforcement cameras are installed on the side of the roadway in black equipment boxes that are elevated
on poles. This equipment automatically detects when the signal light changes to red and then takes photograph and
video images of vehicles that enter the intersection after the light is red. Photo Enforced signs have been placed
at each intersection where the red light enforcement cameras are being used. To learn more about the Red Light
Enforcement Program, please click here
Vehicle Detection Cameras
These cameras are located overhead on the traffic signal arms. They are solely for detecting the presence of vehicles
and determining signal timing. (They are not red light enforcement cameras.) This technology replaces the pavement
vehicle detection systems which sometimes had difficulty detecting motorcycles and would never detect bicycles.
The video detection cameras can easily detect motorcycles and bicycles when they are in the middle of the lane
as any other vehicle. The video camera detection technology is also easier to install and maintain than the old
detection systems which were buried in the pavement.
Communications Antenna
The traffic signal communications antenna is used to establish communications between each traffic signal and the
central control station located at the NRH Public Works Service Center. This helps with traffic signal synchronization
and allows traffic personnel at the Service Center to check signal and system operations remotely.
